363. URIEL HILLMAN, (Robert,4 Benjamin,3-2 John1), b. 3 Feb. 1775; res. C., carpenter; rem. to Farmington, Me. (1807), where he d. 23 Jan. 1861. He m. BETSEY ADAMS (59) 21 Dec. 1797 [in Chilmark], who was b. 6 May 1774 and d. 25 Mch 1858 [in Farmington.] [Dorothy Poole writes in her book, A New Vineyard, "Like his brothers, Uriel sailed in merchant ships to the West Indies, to France and up and down the Atlantic Coast. But unlike his brothers, he did not enjoy going to sea, so he returned to Chilmark where he found employment as a carpenter. He became an exceptionally fine house joiner and his services were in great demand." In 1807 they moved to Maine and cleared Lot No. 17 on the east side of the Sandy River near Farmington. 721. ISAIAH, b. 14 Mch. 1800; m. (1) MARIA HILLMAN (900) 14 Sept. 1825, dau of Whitten (390) and Rebecca Hillman (367); (2) SARAH LAMBERT (202) 26 Jan. 1846. [She died on 8 May 1841 in Chilmark, aged 39y 4m 25d, of "puerperal fever of the brain."] [Isaiah sailed on the ship Milwood of New Bedford from 1820-21, the ship Martha of New Bedford during 1822-23, as boatsteerer on the ship Maryland of New Bedford from 1821-1824 (although Poole notes that he left the Maryland and got a berth on the Pacific, returning to New Bedford in Apr. 1822. He then sailed on the Martha until 1829, when he became first mate on a new cargo ship.) Crew lists describe him as 5' 7" tall with dark hair and a dark complexion. Isaiah appears with Maria in the 1850 Chilmark census as a farmer with children Jonathan R. Hillman (1827); Rebecca Hillman (1830); Love Hillman (1832); Martha P. Hillman (1834); Elizabeth A. Hillman (1837); and Sophronia M. Hillman (1839).]
722. GILBERT RUSSELL, b. 16 Mch. 1802; m. MARY PETTENGILL 1826. [Poole writes that following his apprenticeship at the fulling mill, he sailed from Edgartown in June 1821 on the ship Loan, returning in 1823, but sailing again within a few weeks, returning in Dec. 1825. Poole writes ""From this time Gilbert's travels from New Vineyard to Martha's Vineyard were as regular as his whaling voyages permitted." In 1845 he sailed as master of the Smyrna to the Pacific, before joining the Gold Rush to California. He eventually settled down as a farmer in New Vineyard, in a farm where his grandaughter still resided in 1976.]
