Helen Maria Tilton was born in Calais, Main in June 1854, the daughter of Edward Wilkins Tilton and Nancy Maria Ellsworth Tilton. The family migrated west in 1856 and settled in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Her father was in the lumber industry and became a saw manufacturer and inventor. Helen never married and lived with her father until his death in 1908. She then lived in the home of her brother Edward, Jr. She died in Oshkosh on November 22, 1927.
Mark Hilliard Tilton was born in Calais, Main on April 30, 1856, the son of Edward Wilkins Tilton and Nancy Maria Ellsworth Tilton. The family migrated west prior to 1860 and settled in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. His father was in the lumber industry and became a saw manufacturer and inventor. By 1880 Mark was working as an upholsterer. By 1884 he was working as a traveling salesman and moved to Lincoln, Nebraska shortly after. On December 17, 1890, he was married to Inez Dorris . The couple had three children Doris, Alma, and John. Only Doris survived to adulthood. His wife died on April 28, 1901. He was then married to Lucy Stickney, August 23, 1905, at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.. In Lincoln he worked as an undertaker, and wholesale furniture salesman. The Tilton-Phelps Wholesale Furniture Company was established on February 6, 1905, by Mark H. Tilton, George J. Phelps and Algernon Phelps. Tilton and George Phelps had been associated with the Wisconsin Furniture and Coffin Company and the new firm was created upon their separation from that company. In 1908 it became the M. H. Tilton Furniture Company. The company was sold to another Lincoln furniture company in 1923. He was president of the company by 1930. He died in Lincoln in July 1937.
