Esther Jane Tilton

  General Notes:

Johnson was married three times. He married his first wife, the former Gertrude Brauner, daughter of Cornell University professor Olaf Brauner, in 1923.[3] They were the parents of three children, Karen (b. 16 May 1924), Henrietta (b. 16 April 1927) and Samuel Curtis Jr.(b. 2 March 1928). Herbert and Gertrude were divorced about 1931; their middle daughter Henrietta also died in 1931 (30 March).

He later married (31 December 1936) the former (Esther) Jane Tilton, the widow of William Clyde Roach of Indianapolis, Indiana. Jane died from an embolism on 30 May 1938 in Racine.[4] In 1941, Johnson married Irene Purcell, an actress. They remained married until her death in 1972.[5]

NotesCandid outdoor view of Edward W. Tilton, Jr, with his wife Grace in front of their home. This was possibly taken in Beloit, Wisconsin when the couple lived there from 1922-1932.
Edward Wilkins Tilton, Jr. was born in Oshkosh, WI in 1866, the son of Edward W. Tilton and Nancy Maria Ellsworth. He married Grace Virginia Sacra in Quincy, Illinois on October 22, 1891. The couple had five children together: Helen Maria (1895 \endash 1992); Newell Edward Tilton (1896 \endash 1952); Esther Jane Tilton (1904 \endash 1937); Marian Sue Tilton (1911 \endash 1980); and Robert H Tilton (1913 \endash 1914). Like his father, he was a saw manufacturer and later was a draftsman for Oshkosh Truck, He died in Oshkosh on February 17, 1943.
Grace Virginia Sacra was born on January 10, 1872 in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of Sarah and Allen Sacra. The family farmed in Indiana and by 1880 they were farming in Adams County, Illinois. She was married on October 22, 1891 at Quincy, Adams County, Illinois to Edward W. Tilton, Jr. The couple lived in Oshkosh and raised five children: Helen Maria (1895 \endash 1992); Newell Edward Tilton (1896 \endash 1952); Esther Jane Tilton (1904 \endash 1937); Marian Sue Tilton (1911 \endash 1980); and Robert H Tilton (1913 \endash 1914). Edward died in 1943 and Grace died at Oshkosh on February 11, 1956. She had been a Christian Science Practitioner (healer) her entire adult life.
