bullet  General Notes:

1678. Thomas Tilton was witness to a deed in Gravesend, L. I.

In direct descent from this Thomas Tilton, 7, who removed to Delaware, was James
Tilton, a reputed son, but vindoubtedly he was a grandson insteaci, as records on file at
Washington, in the Pension Department, state that he was about sixty-nine or seventy
years of age, in 18 13, and died May 14, 1822. This would make him to have been born
about 1743 or 1744, and his alleged father, Thomas, would have been about ninety-five
years of age at his birth, which demonstrates that he was a grandson rather than a son
of the said Thomas.

It is further shown by the records of the War Department, at Washington, that
James Tilton, surgeon. Colonel John Haslett's Delaware Regiment, Revolutionary War,
was commissioned, Jan. 13, 1776, and was honorably discharged at the expiration of one
year; that he was appointed physician and surgeon-general. United States Army, June

Our Griffin history is pretty well documented all the way back to the early
1600's. Ebenezer Griffin (Lindsey's Great Grandad) married Mary Morris and
her Mother was Ann Tilton. This is a fascinating look at our Tilton heritage
from 1450 England.

that through the influence of his father the matter was settled, perhaps with physical punishment of
the said thomas, even though he was seventeen years of age, in the presence of the pounder.
The last entry regarding Thomas Tilton in Gravesend regards a transfer of land on May 31, 1678.
On 16th day, 12th month, 1681 thomas was granted a patent, for Rich Farm, in Sussex County,
Delaware, containing 660 acres. It is not known why Thomas removed to Delaware, but a Quakers
were persecuted even in Gravesend (supposedly a place of religious freedom) he probably had
become a Quaker and wished for more freedom to worship.
Thomas Tilton is known to have died before 1719. His widow, Mary died in 1720. A deed dated
January 22, 1754, from Mary Pleasanton, widow of Kent County, Delaware, to John Brinkly recites
that Thomas died without a will leaving "three" children named as follows:
John Tilton
Hester Tilton
Sarah Tilton
For some reason the Brinkly deed named only the three children, above. Four more children are
claimed by descendants.
