He retired from Republic Steel in 1941, due to injuries received in auto accident. He had also worked as a tooldresser on oil wells and a house painter. He was called "Pop" by all the neighborhood children.
He and his brother, Howard, traveled with a carnival prior to their marriages. They operated a train ride for children, and sent postcards of the train back to their sweethearts in Ohio.
