After the death of his father, Samuel (13) and his brother, Daniel (7) went to live in Hampton, Massachusetts to live with their mother and her new husband, Roger Shaw. Unfortunately, Susanna died a year later, leaving the minor boys to be cared for by their step-father. Mr. Shaw proved to be an exemplary step-father, helping Samuel become apprenticed to a carpenter and remembering them in his will. As soon as Samuel attained legal age, Mr. Shaw gave him 15 acres of land in Hampton where he met and married Hannah Moulton. When Roger died in 1760, Samuel became the guardian of Daniel, who was still only 15.
He was a carpenter Will probate 7 Mar 1732 They went to the Vineyard between 1675 and 1680. A Mary Tilton went with them, probably as a servant to help with the young children. She married Isaac Chase abt. 1677.
About midnight, Mr. Samuel Tilton departed this life in the 94th year of his age. He was a man of good understanding, was an antipedobaptist in his judgment, but pious and regular in his conversation. He was against swearing and usery.
