He was a merchant in Southamton, England Came to America in 1631 Owned several mills and a large farm. He was a Selectman in Watertown 1637-1643 and deputy of the General Court 1636-1644, With his son, Thomas, he purchased "all of the Islands between Cape Cod and the Hudson River from Lord Sterling of England in 1642. He was the first Governor of Martha's Vineyard. In 1659 he sold Nantucket to Tristran Coffin, Thomas Macy, Christopher Hussey, Richard Swain, Thomas Barnard, Peter Coffin, Stephen Greenleaf, John Swawin and William Pile for 30 pounds and two beaver hats.
