John Stearns (1762-1843) served several enlistments under differentcommands, 1778-80, in th e New Hampshire militia. In 1832 he was placedon the pension roll of Rockingham County, N. H . He was born in Epping;died in Deerfield, N. H.

The birth of triplets to the family must have been a strange event. All three were named Sarah, after different Sarahs in their family tree, probably because it was assumed that none of them would survive. Only one of the triplets though died as an infant. To differentiate between the two, Sarah Freese Tilton was called "Sallie" while Sarah True Tilton went by "Sarah."
