Retired Field Artillery Officer of World War Dies in This Clty.
Special to The New York Times. WASHINGTON, Oct. 1.--The War Department was notified of the death today in Memorial Hospital, New York, of Lieut. Col. Ernest R. Tilton, retired, He was born at Hyde Park, N. Y., on Sept. 3, 1866, but he made his home since his retirement in Redlands, Cal., where the funeral services will be held. Lieut. Col. Tilton served as a Cap- tain in the Twelfth New York In- fantry during the Spanish War and in 1899 entered the regular army as a Captain of infantry. After trans- ferrlng to the artillery he served in the Quartermaster Corps from 1907 to 1911 and was made a Major in the Coast Artillery Corps in 1916. During the World War he was first a Lieutenant Colonel and then Colo- nel of field artillery. Reverting to the grade of Lieutenant Colonel after the war, he was retired in 1922 after twenty-three years' active service.
He is survlved by his widow, Mrs. Julia L. Tilton."
